Image Quality
With the native resolution of 1080p and screen size of more than 100″ inches, the Optoma HD146x will surely replace your HDTV.
The Optoma claims the contrast ratio of 25,000:1 (with dynamic black levels of 500,000:1) that produces higher black levels in cinematic mode.
In comparison with Epson 1080, the contrast level is much higher and the images do look clear and they didn’t get washed out in brighter conditions.
It also comes with a lumens power of 3600 ANSI which is capable of projecting videos even in daylight conditions.
While testing the Optoma HD164x we get this amount of lumen power by selecting picture mode in the menu option and that hurts color accuracy.
But if you are having a first-time projector experience then will surely enjoy the viewing experience on a bigger screen.
Setup & Performance
With the compact design and weight of less than 7 pounds this projector can be easily set up either on a table or on a ceiling.
If you are going to mount it on the ceiling remember there is no lens shift feature and the zoom function is 1.1x.
But there is a vertical keystone correction of +/- 40° which will help in aligning the image correctly.
Also, the life of the bulb in brighter mode will give 6,000 hours whereas if you run the Optoma in an eco mode which is 29% dimmer will give around 11,000 hours of life.
But in dynamic black mode, the brightness level in darker scenes will be much darker, and in bright scenes, it will be brighter giving more extended lamp life of 14,000 hours.
Due to its compact design and small air vents, the fan makes a lot of noise when running in a brighter mode which can be easily heard when sitting next to the projector.
Same way if your Optoma is running in dynamic mode the fan speed will be adjusted according to the scenes.
If the scenes on the screen are darker the fan noise will be comparatively very low and if the scenes are playing in brighter mode then the fan speed will increase tremendously.
Connectivity
I don’t know why but Optoma has given a few connectivity options at the back of this model to save the cost. There is only a single HDMI port, 1x USB port, and 1x audio port to connect from an external speaker.
But you will get a remote control which is backlit and comes with multiple buttons to control the viewing device.
FAQ
Can I Use Optoma HD146X As Gaming Projector?
Yes, you can play your favorite game on this viewing unit as a casual gamer. The lag time is comparatively low at 16ms in terms of other projection units like Epson 1080.
But you will need an internet connection in order to play games on your favorite console in multiplayer mode with other players.
Will there be any rainbow effect?
Yes, you might see the rainbow effect due to the DLP technology used in this model even though the company claims that you will see zero effect.
But a majority of the people will not see any type of effect rather than some people will see it when in darker scenes.
Does it have Full 3d support?
Yes, you can easily view the 3d content from any source right in your living room making a true 3d cinematic experience with your family member.
But there are no 3d glasses provided with Optoma HD146x and also I didn’t find them even on the official Optoma website.
So, I end up buying it through a third-party source which works perfectly with this model.
